The Mega Millions multiplier is included with every $5 ticket. Since April 2025, it has replaced the optional Megaplier. The multiplier is randomly set at 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X and increases any non-jackpot prize. It appears on your ticket and does not apply to the jackpot.

The official Mega Millions prize matrix shows that every play receives a randomly assigned multiplier.
How the Multiplier Is Applied
The calculation is simple:
Base prize × multiplier = non-jackpot prize
For example:
- Matching four white balls normally pays $500. With a 5X multiplier, the prize is $2,500.
- Matching all five white balls normally pays $1 million. With a 10X multiplier, the prize is $10 million.
The multiplier is attached to the ticket. You do not choose it, and two plays on the same ticket can have different multipliers.
Does the Multiplier Increase the Jackpot?
No. The Mega Millions multiplier does not affect the jackpot.
The jackpot requires matching all five white balls and the gold Mega Ball. Jackpot winners receive the advertised jackpot amount, subject to the choice between the cash option and annuity option. The multiplier applies only to the eight non-jackpot prize tiers.
Is the Multiplier the Same as the Old Megaplier?
No. The Megaplier was retired in April 2025.
Under the previous $2 Mega Millions game, players in most states could pay an extra $1 for the optional Megaplier. It offered a 2X, 3X, 4X or 5X increase.
The current $5 Mega Millions ticket includes a randomly assigned 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X multiplier without a separate purchase.
Does the Multiplier Improve Your Odds of Winning?
No. The multiplier increases the amount paid when you win a non-jackpot prize, but it does not make your numbers more likely to be drawn.
Your odds remain based on the Mega Millions number-selection rules. The multiplier changes the payout, not the odds.
What Should You Check on Your Ticket?
After a drawing, check:
- Your five white-ball numbers.
- Your gold Mega Ball number.
- The multiplier printed on the ticket.
Matching the Mega Ball alone with a 4X multiplier pays $20 because the $5 base prize is multiplied by four.
The current Mega Millions ticket costs $5 and includes the multiplier. For a ticket matching all five white balls, the multiplier can increase the $1 million base prize to as much as $10 million.
